WHAT WE BUILD

RETAINING WALL TYPES

We build retaining walls in multiple materials depending on your site conditions, aesthetic preferences, and budget. Every wall starts with the same non-negotiables: proper base preparation, drainage, and engineering.

MOST POPULAR

ALLAN BLOCK / SEGMENTAL BLOCK

Interlocking concrete block walls are the go-to choice for most NJ residential retaining walls. They’re engineered for strength, install cleanly, and come in textures that look like natural stone without the cost.

MOST BEAUTIFUL

NATURAL STONE WALLS

Fieldstone, bluestone, and granite dry-stack or mortared walls that look like they belong on the landscape. Natural stone walls are timeless, unique, and add significant property value when done right.

MAXIMUM STRENGTH

POURED CONCRETE WALLS

For heavy loads, steep grades, and commercial applications, poured reinforced concrete walls offer maximum structural strength. These are engineered walls built to handle the most demanding site conditions.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART

DRAINAGE IS EVERYTHING

Most retaining walls that fail don’t fail because of the wall itself — they fail because of what’s behind it. Hydrostatic pressure from trapped water is the #1 cause of wall failure in NJ. We build every wall with a complete drainage system so water never becomes a problem.

01

EXCAVATION & BASE PREP

We dig to proper depth and compact a gravel base that prevents settling and gives the wall a stable, level foundation from day one.

02

DRAINAGE AGGREGATE BACKFILL

Clean crushed stone is packed behind the wall to allow water to move freely rather than build up pressure against the structure.

03

PERFORATED DRAIN PAPE

A drain pipe at the base of the wall collects water and directs it away from the structure — critical for NJ’s heavy rain and snowmelt cycles.

04

GEOTEXTILE FABRIC

Filter fabric separates the drainage stone from the surrounding soil, preventing clogging over time while letting water pass freely.

WHEN TO CALL US

WARNING SIGNS YOUR RETAINING WALL NEEDS ATTENTION

Retaining walls don’t fail overnight — they give warning signs first. Don’t ignore them. Catching problems early saves thousands in repair costs and prevents property damage.

WALL IS LEANING OR TILTING

17c185e0 e1c2 4784 9299 3cb3865b6c22

Any visible lean means the wall is losing the battle against soil pressure. This requires immediate evaluation — it won’t fix itself.

HORIZONTAL CRACKS

17c185e0 e1c2 4784 9299 3cb3865b6c22

Horizontal cracks indicate bending stress from soil pressure behind the wall. Vertical cracks are less serious, but horizontal ones mean structural failure is coming.

BULGING OR BOWING

17c185e0 e1c2 4784 9299 3cb3865b6c22

A bulge in the face of the wall means soil is pushing through. This section is compromised and needs repair or replacement before full collapse.

WATER SEEPING THROUGH

17c185e0 e1c2 4784 9299 3cb3865b6c22

Water coming through the wall face means your drainage system is failing or missing entirely. This leads to accelerated freeze-thaw damage every winter.

SOIL EROSION BEHIND WALL

17c185e0 e1c2 4784 9299 3cb3865b6c22

Soil washing out from behind or around the wall means your drainage is directing water the wrong way. Left unchecked, the base becomes unstable.

GAPS BETWEEN BLOCKS OR STONES

17c185e0 e1c2 4784 9299 3cb3865b6c22

Gaps forming in a block or stone wall mean movement has started. The sooner it’s addressed, the less material will need replacing.

HOW WE BUILD IT

OUR RETAINING WALL PROCESS

1

SITE ASSESSMENT

We evaluate grade, soil type, water flow, and load requirements before recommending any material or design.

2

EXCAVATION & BASE

Proper depth excavation and compacted gravel base — the foundation of a wall that stays straight for decades.

3

WALL CONSTRUCTION

Each course is leveled and set back at the correct batter angle. No shortcuts, no guessing.

4

DRAINAGE INSTALLATION

Gravel backfill, drain pipe, and geotextile fabric are installed as we build — not as an afterthought.

5

FINAL GRADE & CLEANUP

Top soil is graded, debris is removed, and we walk through the finished wall with you before we leave.

COMMON QUESTIONS

RETAINING WALL FAQ

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in NJ?

In most NJ municipalities, retaining walls over 4 feet in height require a permit and engineering review. Some towns require permits for walls as low as 3 feet. We check your town’s requirements and can assist with the permit application.

Yes. We assess existing walls and determine whether repair or full replacement is the right call. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation — not just the most expensive option.

Cost depends on height, length, material, site access, and drainage requirements. We provide detailed written estimates after a free site visit so you know exactly what you’re getting. Call us at 201-925-7439 to schedule.

Yes — demo and haul-away of existing walls and debris is included in our quotes unless otherwise specified. We clear the site completely before building new.

How long does a retaining wall last?

A properly built retaining wall with correct drainage should last 25–50+ years. Most walls that fail early do so because of inadequate drainage or a poor base — both of which we address on every single job.

For most residential applications, Allan Block or segmental concrete block is our top recommendation — it’s engineered for strength, handles NJ frost cycles well, and looks great. Natural stone is best for aesthetic applications. We’ll recommend the right material for your specific site.

Absolutely. Tiered walls are often the best solution for taller grade changes — they distribute the load across multiple shorter walls, are easier to permit, and often look better than one tall wall. We design the tier spacing and drainage for each tier separately.

Most residential retaining walls are completed in 2–4 days depending on length and complexity. Larger or tiered systems may take longer. We’ll give you a clear schedule in your written estimate.
